Birth
of the Monkey - How it all started
Our
lead singer (and mentor), Ron takes up the story :-
A
long time ago, three singles (45's) were placed on my mom and
dad's gramophone by a mate of mine. I listened to the three
records, they were: 'Double Barrel' and 'Monkey
Spanner' by Dave and Ansil Collins and 'Liquidator' by
Harry J. All Stars - I was hooked and have loved Ska and Reggae
ever since, playing in Reggae bands when ever I was able to.
In early 2002, I decided to put together a Ska/Reggae Big Band.
So many different people told me 'Great idea but you'll never
pull it off and you'll get no work', but my friends saw some
great potential in the idea. From that day Monkey Spanner was
born and we set about putting the band together and searching
through my old record collection for material. By September
2002 after a few changes of personnel, we were ready to hit
the circuit. Since then we really haven't looked back. Ska and
Reggae from the 60's and 70's is back - BIG TIME! - and we are
all old enough to remember it the first time around!
Ska
Revival?
The
Ska phenomenon continues to astound the music industry and it
is now enjoying it's third revival (3rd Wave). You only have
to turn-on your TV nowadays and chances are you will hear a
Ska tune - particularly in adverts. There is a Ska revival currently
underway in the USA, Germany, Australia and other parts of the
world. New bands are forming all the time, bringing their own
renditions and versions of the 'old' Ska/Reggae favourites that
we have come to know so well. The current phase of 'Ska-Punk'
bands also base their musical direction and influences on those
original Ska hits.
